Vol. 91 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Mayo Estates.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that the Victor Shean Carter estate, in the Barony of Erris, County Mayo, is in the hands of the Irish Land Commission for a number of years and that the tenants on it are anxious that it be immediately divided; and if he will state when there will be a rearrangement of this estate.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that the Dickens estate in the Currane Peninsula, Achill, County Mayo, is in the hands of the Irish Land Commission for a number of years, and that the tenants on it are anxious that it be immediately divided; and if he will state when a division will take place.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that the Carson estate, Muingnabo and Baurhaven, in the Barony of Erris, County Mayo, is in the hands of the Irish Land Commission for a number of years, and that the tenants on it are anxious that it be divided; and if he will state when division will take place.

I propose to take together the Deputy's three questions relative to the Carter, Dickens and Carson estates, in County Mayo, as their circumstances are similar. These estates of tenanted land coming under the Land Act, 1923, vested in the Land Commission under Section 9 of the Land Act, 1931, on 1st May, 1931, the appointed day. All three estates require rearrangement of the holdings prior to revesting of the lands, and such rearrangement is a difficult and tedious process, which has been interrupted by the diversion to other Departments of a large proportion of the staff of the Land Commission owing to emergency conditions. A certain amount of preliminary work has been done on the Carson estate; and on the large Carter estate (which comprises over 600 holdings) 71 holdings have been already dealt with by re-arrangement. The rearrangement of the balance of the holdings on the Carter estate and the holdings on the Dickens and Carson estates will be undertaken as soon as circumstances permit.
