Vol. 92 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Supply of Cycle Tyres to Rural Workers.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he is aware that, owing to the absence of an adequate supply of tyres, grave hardships are endured by rural workers engaged in factories, county council roads, and forestry schemes, and by all such persons who are obliged to cycle long distances to their work daily; and, if so, if he will consider the desirability of either allocating a reasonable supply of tyres direct to the management of such factories, etc., or earmarking the supplies of local retailers as has been done in respect of tyres supplied to L.S.F. and L.D.F. personnel, in order to enable workers to be supplied with such accessories when absolutely required.

I would refer the Deputy to the replies I gave on the 20th October and 24th November to questions regarding the distribution of cycle tyres in which I indicated that it would be quite impracticable to differentiate between the many and varied clashes of persons requiring bicycles for essential purposes or to give preference in such distribution to any particular class.
