Vol. 92 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Use of Humane Killers.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he can state (approximately) how many humane killers (i.e., approved instruments under the Slaughter of Animals Act, 1935) are in use in the slaughterhouses of Éire, and of those in use approximately how many are of the Cash type, how many of the Temple Cox type and how many of the Scharmer type.

According to returns furnished by sanitary authorities there are 1,065 slaughtermen licensed under the Slaughter of Animals Act, 1935, in the area in which the Act is in operation. Complete figures as to the numbers of approved instruments in use in this country are not available in my Department, but it does not necessarily follow that there should be the same number of instruments. It is probable that the same instrument may be used by more than one slaughterman. According to the particulars available, it appears that there have been 500 instruments of the Schermer type in use. Particulars as to the numbers of instruments of the Cash and Temple Cox type are not available.
