Vol. 92 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kanturk Sewerage Scheme.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he is aware that much dissatisfaction exists amongst the inhabitants of the town of Kanturk owing to the delay in putting the long-promised sewerage scheme into operation, and if he will inquire into the causes of this delay and apply the remedy in view of the danger to public health which arises from the present primitive sanitary arrangements in that town.

The installation of a sewerage system for Kanturk is primarily a matter for the local sanitary authority. I have had no representations from that body in regard to delay in putting a new scheme into operation. The local authority started some time ago a scheme for the improvement of the water supply of the town, but owing to difficulty in obtaining certain requisites it has not, so far, been found possible to complete it fully. In the interval the plans for the sewerage scheme have been in course of preparation. The planning of the scheme has presented considerable difficulty to the local authority as either a pumping or ejector plant will be necessary, and it is doubtful if such plant could be obtained at the present time. I am addressing the council in the matter and as soon as the necessary documents are received from the local authority they will be dealt with.
