Vol. 92 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Salaries of Women Teachers.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that many women teachers are living on salaries ranging from 39/- per week to 53/- per week and that such rates are totally inadequate to meet the present cost of living; and if he will consider granting an increase, either in their salaries or by cost-of-living bonus.

I am aware of that fact that the salaries of a number of teachers come within the range of the figures mentioned by the Deputy.

As from the 1st January, 1943, an emergency bonus was given to teachers with emoluments under a specified amount (£399 p.a., approximately).

It will be appreciated that the question of an increase in the pay of these teachers can be considered only as part of the much wider problem of Government commitments in other directions. These are being examined, and I am not therefore in a position at this stage to give any indication as to the possibility of a further increase as suggested in the Deputy's question.
