Vol. 92 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wages on Kildare Bog Schemes.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the rate of wages paid in County Kildare on bog development schemes authorised by the Special Employment Schemes Office of the Office of Public Works.

The rate of wages authorised for these schemes is 36/- per week of 48 hours.

In view of the fact that county council workers are paid 39/- a week, will the Minister not consider giving a better wage to people employed on these schemes?

The rate of wages paid on these schemes was 32/- a week when the new agricultural rate came into existence, but, following on that, these workers had their wages increased by 4/-.

Does the Parliamentary Secretary not realise that a man, with a wife and family, cannot possibly live on 36/- a week, and surely, in view of that fact, he will consider the question of raising the rate of wages paid?

The rate of wages paid is equivalent to the minimum agricultural wage rate, paid all over the country.
