Vol. 92 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Enniscorthy Labour Exchange.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state why the manager of the Enniscorthy Labour Exchange was discharged from the post, and if there are any payments due to this man.

Mr. Shiel's appointment as part-time branch manager at Enniscorthy was subject to three months' written notice of termination given on either side without cause assigned, the Minister reserving to himself the power, in certain circumstances, to terminate the appointment either summarily or at shorter notice. Three months' written notice terminating his appointment without cause assigned was issued to Mr. Shiel. His services terminated on 24th January, 1944.

In accordance with the usual procedure in such cases, payment of the balance of remuneration due to Mr. Shiel is being withheld pending completion of the audit of the Enniscorthy Branch Employment Office accounts.

I consider that this man should have been informed why he was served with three months' notice. The general public in Enniscorthy are wondering why he was discharged. What was the reason for removing him from office? Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that an advertisement for a manager appeared in the local Press?

I have nothing to add to the information that I have already given the Deputy.

Was any reason assigned for this man's removal from office?

I have already pointed out that the manager was served with three months' notice without cause assigned.

Was it because of age?

I have made it perfectly clear that the manager was not informed of this cause, and I am not now in a position to state the reason.
