Vol. 92 No. 17

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Kerry Land for Forestry.

asked the Minister for Lands if his attention has been drawn to the offer of over 3,000 acres of land to the Forestry Department on the holdings of McGillycuddy, Chute, Daly and others, in Glencar, County Kerry; and if he will speed up acquisition with a view to creating a forestry centre in this area which is admirably suitable for afforestation.

I am aware of the offers of lands for forestry in the Glencar districts. Offers amounting to approximately 2,000 acres have been received, but in practically every case there are difficulties about undefined boundaries, grazing rights, means of access, etc.

It was hoped to acquire areas on two estates, totalling over 400 acres, and to commence operations there, adding additional lands as soon as the difficulties concerning them could be resolved. Unfortunately the Forestry Division has been unable up to the present to obtain definite replies to queries regarding grazing rights sent to agents for one of these estates and this is holding up the whole matter. Further inquiries are being issued and it is hoped to be in a position to commence operations in the Glencar district before the end of next financial year.
