Vol. 92 No. 18

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Emergency Powers Order.

asked the Mini ster for Agriculture if he will state the reasons for the revocation on the 18th February, 1944, of Emergency Powers (Cream) Order, 1944, which was made on the 10th January, 1944.

The temporary stoppage of the sale of cream was one of the measures taken to ensure adequate supplies of liquid milk during the period of low milk production in January and February. The Order was withdrawn on 28th February when it had become clear that a shortage of liquid milk during the remainder of the winter season was not to be apprehended.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, I do not want to enter into the reasons for the making or withdrawal of the Order, but in view of the general apprehension that exists in regard to emergency Orders, does he not think that it is hardly advisable to make an Order which is withdrawn in 20 days? It casts a reflection on this method of legislation, and thought should be given in the future to this point in the making of emergency Orders.

When the Order was made, it was anticipated that it would be withdrawn in a short time.

I think it is well that we have such machinery available so that we have not to come before the Dáil with a special Bill to deal with an urgent shortage like this.

I suppose the Minister could not indicate the extent of the savings made in the 20 days?

The total saving was roughly about 120 cwts. of cream. It is not a lot.
