Vol. 93 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Execution of Road Works.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that many urgent and needed road works which may be performed under the Minor Improvement Schemes have been abandoned because of the refusal of one or more of the parties to give the necessary consent to the execution of the work; and if, in view of the hardships inflicted on the consenting parties by the said refusal, he will consider the advisability of acquiring compulsory powers in such cases.

I am aware that cases of the kind referred to by the Deputy sometimes occur. Since, however, the primary purpose of these schemes is the relief of unemployment and as the number of cases in which compulsion would be necessary is relatively small, I do not propose to seek compulsory powers to deal with them.
