Vol. 93 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Working of County Cork Bog.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether he is aware that 50 men were employed cutting turf last season at Lisheencreagh Bog, Ballydehob, County Cork, in addition to 22 tenants who obtained turf on the bog; that the bog in question has been recently drained, and a new road constructed through it; and if he will state the reason for the issue of an order to the effect that turf is not to be cut in this bog this season.

My Department has been advised that the turf produced on this bog is not of a quality which would bear the handling that is involved in transporting turf to non-turf areas. The acting county surveyor was notified on the 19th January, 1944, that production should be limited to such quantities as would likely be required for local purposes. There is no prohibition on direct production by the county council or on the granting of leases to persons who desire to cut turf either for their own use or for sale. Any turf that is suitable for transport to other areas will find a market. I am informed that about 1,500 tons will be produced by private cutters on this bog during the present year.
