Vol. 93 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Remission of Penalties.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state the number of cases in which the fines and/or imprisonment imposed by district justices for breach of Emergency Powers Orders have been varied by him; the number of such cases in which half or more of the fine was so remitted; and the number of such cases in which three-quarters or more of the fine was so remitted.

Mr. Boland

During the four years 1940 to 1943, inclusive, remissions of fines were granted in approximately 200 cases of breaches of Emergency Powers Orders. The average remission was in the neighbourhood of three-quarters of the fine.

During the same period, mitigations of sentences of imprisonment for the same class of offence were granted to 15 individuals.
