Vol. 93 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Manufacture of Ice Cream.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he is aware that a number of persons have in the past been engaged in the manufacture of ice cream for about eight months each year, having procured for this purpose a supply of ice cream powder from sweet manufacturers; and that the manufacture of ice cream powder has been discontinued, rendering it impossible for those engaged in the manufacture of ice cream to continue in this particular line of business, which in many instances formed a substantial part of their annual income; and if he will consider relieving this hardship by making available to those concerned a quantity of sugar in proportion to the amount of ice cream powder purchased by them in any previous year for the manufacture of ice cream.

I am aware that a number of persons have in the past used ice cream powder for the purpose of making ice cream, but I am not aware that the manufacture of this commodity has been discontinued.

The makers of ice cream powder are in receipt of a sugar allowance equivalent to 80 per cent. of the quantity of sugar used in making the powder during the year 1940 and consequently they should be in a position to supply those persons who were customers during 1940 with at least 80 per cent. of the quantity purchased during that year.

In these circumstances, I regret that I cannot see my way to make available to those concerned any additional allocations of sugar.
