Vol. 93 No. 5

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Erection of Limekilns.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will consider a scheme under the Department for financing persons who are interested in the production of lime so as to enable them to erect new limekilns in areas where there is a shortage of lime at present.

A scheme is in operation at present whereby grants are made by my Department towards the construction of limekilns or the renovation of existing kilns in congested districts. Outside the congested districts some county committees of agriculture have in operation schemes for the making of grants for the construction or repair of limekilns. Any proposals from other county committees of agriculture for the operation of similar schemes will be carefully considered by my Department.

Under the Emergency Powers (No. 286) Order, 1943, county councils are empowered to acquire limestone land, limestone quarries, and limekilns; to construct limekilns; to engage in the production and sale of lime; and to make lettings of limekilns acquired or constructed by them.

These facilities appear to be sufficient to enable sufficient supplies of lime to be made available in all districts.
