Vol. 93 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Forge Iron.

asked the Minister for Supplies whether he will consider fixing the price of all other forge iron in the same way as has been done in respect of shoeing iron, as in many areas exorbitant prices are being charged to blacksmiths, welders and others whose trade depends on iron.

Prices have not been fixed for forge iron other than horse-shoe iron and wheel-band iron in the absence of supplies through normal distribution channels. In the event of it becoming possible to provide for an allocation of iron for general forging purposes, the question of fixing prices will receive consideration.

Is the Minister aware that some merchants have large stocks of iron and that these are being sold to blacksmiths and other tradesmen at excessive prices? Would the Minister consider fixing a price for the iron which they have in stock?

The only iron at present being distributed through normal channels is horse-shoe iron and wheel-band iron.

Would the Minister not consider fixing prices for these irons?

They are fixed.

The Minister's prices do not seem to be effective because these people are charging what they like for the iron.
