Vol. 93 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Industrial Firms' Post-War Plans.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he will state, in elaboration of his speech at the annual meeting of the Federation of Irish Industries, Ltd., on the 8th February last, the total number of firms and the number of firms in the following industries: (1) brewing, (2) tobacco, (3) assembly, construction and repair of vehicles, (4) boot and shoe (wholesale factories), (5) fellmongery and leather, and (6) fertilisers, which have, up to a current date, (a) submitted completed reports of post-war extensions contemplated by them, and (b) with which his Department has had detailed discussions on plans involving a 50 per cent. or other increase in employment after the war.

The total number of firms which have submitted completed reports in connection with post-war planning of industry is 210. Of the industries mentioned by the Deputy six completed reports have been received from boot and shoe factories and five from manufacturers of leather.

The discussions referred to in my address to the Federation of Irish Manufacturers, Limited, were those which took place with industrialists prior to the submission by them of detailed proposals. No detailed discussions have as yet taken place following the receipt of such proposals.
