Vol. 93 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Canal Workers' Bonus.

Mr. A. Byrne (for Mr. Flanagan)

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the reasons why canal agents were not included in an Order made by his Department granting emergency bonus to workers of the Grand Canal Company.

Bonus Orders are made only on the application of the parties concerned, and in accordance with such application. Canal agents were not included amongst the classes of employees specified in the applications for bonus Orders applicable to employees of the Grand Canal Company, and were not, therefore, included in the bonus Orders subsequently made.

Mr. A. Byrne

That means that the agents have got no bonus at all since the emergency?

It means that no application for a bonus Order was received by me concerning them.

Mr. A. Byrne

Will the Minister say whether he got an application from the canal lock-keepers as well, and why these two classes—agents and lock-keepers——?

The Deputy must not address that question to me. I do not know why the applicants confined their application to certain classes of employees, but they did.
