Vol. 93 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployed Plotholders.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that unemployed plotholders throughout the country have no means of acquiring seeds, manures and other essentials for the growing of food, and if, in view of the importance of ensuring that no plot of good land, however small, will be allowed to be wasted, he will take immediate steps to provide them with these essentials, or make loans or grants to enable such to be acquired.

I am not aware that the position is as stated by the Deputy. Arrangements are in operation under the Acquisition of Land (Allotments) (Amendment) Act, 1934, for the provision of seeds, manures, spraying materials and the use of implements, free of cost, for the cultivation of allotments let to approved unemployed persons by local authorities and approved associations. The cost of such requisites is recouped to the local authorities and approved associations by my Department.
