Vol. 93 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Imprisonment of members of the Jewish faith.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state the number of persons of the Jewish faith who were committed under sentence of imprisonment for criminal offences in the years 1940, 1941, 1942, 1943, and the number of such cases in which any mitigation of sentence was granted on petition; and if he will further state the percentage such committals bear in relation to the total number of committals under sentence.

The number of persons of the Jewish faith who were committed under sentence of imprisonment for criminal offences in the years 1940 to 1943 was 12, the number of such cases in which mitigation of sentence was granted was three and the percentage of such committals in relation to the total number of committals to prison for criminal offences was slightly over one-tenth of one per cent.

Is the Minister satisfied that there is no foundation for the suggestion made in the debate on his Estimate by Deputy McGilligan contrary to what has been stated?

Mr. Boland

As far as I recollect, I told the Deputy so and he accepted my assurance. That is as far as my recollection goes.
