Vol. 93 No. 12

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Supplies of Repair Leather.

asked the Minister for Supplies whether he is aware that many boot and shoe repairers in Dundalk and Drogheda have been adversely affected by the method adopted in establishing quotas for a supply of repair leather, based on the pre-war year from 31st August, 1938, to 1st September, 1939, as these repairers were accustomed to obtain their supplies of leather from cross-Channel sources during and previous to that period, and have no quota with any Irish wholesaler although they have since made substantial purchases from Irish wholesalers; and whether, in order to ensure supplies of leather to boot and shoe repairers so affected he will take steps to ensure the allocation of quotas to such repairers based on their purchases during years when they obtained their supplies from Irish wholesalers.

I am not aware of any cases of difficulty of the nature referred to by the Deputy in Dundalk and Drogheda. Under the arrangements which have been made to control the distribution of leather, traders who imported some of their leather in the basic year are given quotas which take account of their imports. If the boot and shoe repairers to whom the question refers communicate with my Department, arrangements will be made to have supplies of leather made available to them accordingly.
