Vol. 93 No. 14

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Birr Turf Banks.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that the only entrance to the turf banks set to tenants of the town of Birr by Captain Weldon, Clonbeal House, Birr, County Offaly, is by the avenue leading to Captain Weldon's house; that there is an objection to turf cutters drawing turf through this avenue; and that in view of this it is not contemplated setting the turf banks to the tenants this year, which is causing great inconvenience to turf cutters in the town; and, in order to relieve the situation, whether the Office of Public Works will make a new entrance road into the bog so as to enable it to be set; and whether, in the special circumstances, he will request Offaly County Council to provide the men to do this important work in conjunction with the turf-production schemes in the area.

I have received no representations regarding the necessity for the construction of a road to serve the turbary area in question. I will, however, have the proposal investigated and let the Deputy know the position in due course.
