Vol. 94 No. 2

Arterial Drainage Bill, 1944—First Stage.

Leave granted to introduce a Bill entitled an Act to make provision for the drainage and improvement of land by the execution of works of arterial drainage, to provide for the maintenance of those works and make further and better provision for the maintenance of existing drainage works, and to provide for matters incidental to or connected with the matters aforesaid or relating generally to the drainage of land.—(Minister for Finance).
Second Stage ordered for first day of sitting next week.

We will not be sitting on Monday of next week.

The Deputy should know that the House is not obliged to sit on the day fixed for the Second Reading; but the Bill may not be taken earlier without the consent of the House to rescind the order made.

Seriously speaking, is the Government fixing the Second Stage of the Bill for a day that it is known perfectly well it cannot be taken? I assume that the House is going to sit on Tuesday of next week.

I suggested Monday next and I was told that we would not be sitting then. I then suggested the first day the House was sitting next week, and I was told that I must name a day.

Second Stage ordered for Tuesday, June 20th.
