Vol. 94 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Holidays for Dock Workers.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he proposes to amend the Holidays (Employees) Act to entitle temporary dockers and port workers who have worked the necessary number of hours during the year to holidays with pay.

I would refer the Deputy to replies given to similar questions on February 3rd, May 20th, and July 8th, 1943, and on March 2nd, 1944.

Has the Minister not changed his mind since then? Have the men affected not made a case for holidays with pay, men who work the required number of hours with different companies?

It is not a question of changing my mind. I invited the Deputy to submit any practical suggestions that he might have in mind as to how the difficulties could be overcome. He has not submitted any so far.

I submitted the suggestion that where men work for four months with one company, four months with another, and four months with another, that the three could be combined, so that the men could get a fortnight's holidays with pay. I think the difficulties are not insurmountable. That is my suggestion.
