Vol. 94 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Seanad Nominating Bodies.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will consider the question of giving the Association of Municipal Authorities of Ireland and the County Councils General Council, which are two nominating bodies, the same right to elect seven members each to the Seanad Electoral College as have county councils and county borough councils.

Each county and county borough council has the right to elect seven members to the Seanad Electorate. A county council is representative of the whole of the county, including urban districts in the county. There is no reason, therefore, why the Association of Municipal Authorities and the County Councils General Council should have special representation. I would point out that each of these bodies is a nominating body and entitled to nominate two members to the administrative panel under the Seanad Electoral (Panel Members) Act, 1937.
