Vol. 94 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Free Legal Aid for the Poor.

asked the Minister for Justice whether the existing facilities for the provision of free legal aid to poor persons are considered by his Department as satisfactory; and whether in any case he will institute an inquiry into the possibilities of extending and improving the provision of free legal aid to poor persons so as to ensure that such persons shall not be unreasonably debarred by reason of their poverty from securing and enjoying the protection of the law and the judicial machinery nor, conversely, inequitably handicapped by reason of their poverty in presenting their defence when required to do so in the course of the process of law.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to a somewhat similar question asked by Deputy Martin O'Sullivan on the 30th March last. I have nothing to add at present to that reply or to the observations which I made in the course of my replies to the supplementary questions asked on that occasion.
