Vol. 94 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wood Fuel for Kilkenny Poor.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that Grange Wood, Grange, County Kilkenny, which has been acquired recently for afforestation contains timber suitable only for fuel purposes, and, if so, if he will consider allocating this timber as free fuel for the poor of Kilkenny City and vicinity, or alternatively supplying it to these people at the cost of felling.

It is presumed that the wood referred to is that at Woodlands, Cuffesgrange, recently acquired by the Forestry Division. For sylvicultural reasons a certain amount of timber will have to be reserved in the form of screens, etc., and the remainder will probably be sold as firewood when the question of local needs will be considered.

The Forestry Division has no authority to supply firewood free of charge to the poor. Under an Emergency Powers Order local authorities have power to purchase and dispose of firewood and defray the cost out of the rates.
