Vol. 94 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Bus Fares.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that following the substitution on the Dun Laoghaire and Dalkey line of a bus service for the hitherto existing tram service, fares have been in creased considerably; that the single fare between Dublin and Dun Laoghaire on the tramway service was 4d. and that on the bus service the fare is now 6d.; that the single fare between Dublin and Dalkey on the tram service was 5d. and that on the bus service the fare is now 8d.; whether he has approved of such substantial increases in fares over these routes and, if so, the grounds on which the increase was sanctioned.

The fares which are being charged on the Dun Laoghaire and Dalkey bus services are identical with the fares which were charged for the similar stages on the Dalkey bus service immediately prior to its suspension in April, 1942, and are considerably below the statutory maximum omnibus fares. In these circumstances the final part of the Deputy's question does not arise.

Is the Minister aware that, when he says that bus fares charged on the Dun Laoghaire and Dalkey bus services are identical with the fares charged for similar stages on that service, prior to the suspension of the service in 1942, there was a fairly substantial tram service available in that area, which has now ceased, and that people who could not, at that time, afford to travel on the bus, are now compelled to travel on buses, instead of on the trams?

I think the people on these routes who have got the benefit of weekly tickets, which are calculated at tram fare rates, are in fact more advantageously situated than people on other routes who have not the benefit of such tickets.
