Vol. 94 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Extension of Summer Time.

asked the Minister for Justice if many of the difficulties occasioned by the drastic cut in the electric light supply to private consumers could be mitigated by the introduction of double summer time, and, if so, if he is considering its introduction.

asked the Minister for Justice if, in view of the curtailment of electricity, he is prepared to extend the summer time from the 1st July to the 1st October by a further hour.

Mr. Boland

I propose to take questions Nos. 24 and 25 together.

The question of introducing double summer time has been further considered in the light of the most recent developments as regards the restriction of supplies of electricity. It is believed that such saving of electricity and mitigation of the difficulties occasioned to consumers as might be achieved by the introduction of double summer time would be outweighed by the disadvantages which such a step would entail for large sections of the community, notably farmers and younger children. In considering this matter, with particular reference to the fact that double summer time has been adopted in Great Britain, an important factor, which is apt to be lost sight of but which it is very necessary to bear in mind, is that normally our time in this country is from 25 to 40 minutes more in advance of solar time than is the time in Great Britain. To a certain extent, therefore, double summer time might be said to be in operation here at present and the question of an advance of a further hour must be considered with due regard to that fact. In all the circumstances, it has been decided not to introduce double summer time.

I wish to give notice of my intention to raise a question on the adjournment—question No. 37 on yesterday's list.

I am afraid the Deputy has been forestalled. I will put it in for next Tuesday. He has been forestalled by Deputy Flanagan, who had a question down to-day.
