Vol. 94 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - College Entrance Examinations.

Mr. Corish

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that much dissatisfaction prevails with regard to the annual examination for entrance to Cathal Brugha Street and Sion Hill Training Colleges; if, in consequence of this, he will consider altering the system on which these examinations are conducted, and also if he will publish the names and marks of successful candidates, as in Civil Service examinations.

No complaints have been made to me or to my Department regarding the annual examinations for entrance to the two training colleges mentioned by the Deputy, and I am not aware that any dissatisfaction exists with regard to the examinations in question, or that there is any good reason for it. I might mention that the training college at Sion Hill, Blackrock, is under private management, and apart from requiring that all candidates admitted to training must possess certain qualifications, my Department does not exercise any control over the manner in which candidates are selected for admission. As regards the other training college, St. Mary's, Cathal Brugha Street, Dublin, owing to the large number of candidates that compete annually for the limited number of places available it was decided recently to revise the manner in which the competition has hitherto been conducted, and notification of the new system has already been sent to vocational education committees, and to the managers of all schools that prepare girls for the competition. As regards publishing the names and marks of the successful candidates, I cannot undertake to issue a special publication for this purpose, but I have no objection to publishing the information in the Department's Annual Report.
