Vol. 94 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Army Deferred Pay.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state whether soldiers who are released from the Army, for health or other reasons, will be granted their deferred pay before the end of the present emergency; and if he is aware of the hardships on those released through having to wait for their deferred pay for such an indefinite time.

As I stated in the course of my reply to the debate on this year's Army Estimates, I have been endeavouring for some time to secure that deferred pay should be issued, without awaiting the end of the emergency, to the next-of-kin of deceased non-commissioned officers and men and to non-commissioned officers and men whose service in the Defence Forces has been terminated by discharge. My efforts in that regard have now been successful and the necessary regulation in the matter has been made. It provides for the issue of deferred pay, as quickly as possible, to the next-of-kin of deceased personnel and to all discharged non-commissioned officers and men other than those discharged for the purpose of reenlistment, or for the purpose of being appointed to commissioned rank.
