Vol. 94 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Incidence of Diphtheria.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state in respect of each county and county borough and for each year since 1937 (a) the number of children immunised against diphtheria; (b) the number of immunised children who subsequently contracted diphtheria; (c) the number of immunised children who died from diphtheria, and the gross totals in all three classes.

The information available in my Department regarding immunisation against diphtheria relates only to schemes administered by local authorities, which provides for the treatment of children only. Figures for the years 1941, 1942, and 1943 have been compiled in the form of a tabular statement which will be circulated with the Official Report. The figures for the other years mentioned in the question will have to be obtained from the local authorities, and it may not be possible to furnish them to the Deputy for some time. The tabular statement is as follows:—

DIPHTHERIA IMMUNISATION.

RETURN showing for each county borough and county in respect of each of the years ended 31st December, 1941, 1942 and 1943, respectively, (A) the number of children immunised against diphtheria under immunisation schemes of the local authorities; (B) the number of children immunised under the schemes who subsequently contracted diphtheria (b¹) between completion of course and expiration of period necessary to confer immunity (b²) after expiration of period necessary to confer immunity, and (C) the number of children immunised under the schemes who died from diphtheria during the periods set out at (b¹) and (b²).
