Vol. 94 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Portlaoighise Prison Conditions.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will permit Deputies representing the constituency of Leix-Offaly to investigate the conditions in Portlaoighise Prison which are reported to be most unfavourable towards, political prisoners.

The answer is in the negative.

That was the reply I expected, but I am of opinion that Deputies representing the constituency of Leix-Offaly should be given permission, accompanied by the governor of the prison, to examine the conditions under which prisoners are treated there at the present time.

Mr. Boland

The Deputy is entitled to his opinion. He can have any opinion he likes.

The Minister is responsible for the bad conditions of the prisoners at any rate.
