Vol. 95 No. 8

Ceisteanna. — Questions. Oral Answers. - Coal Supplies for Tipperary Blacksmiths.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he has received representations from the Tipperary North Riding Blacksmiths' Association with reference to the supply of proper coal for their members; if he is aware that over 40 blacksmiths in North Tipperary may be compelled to close their forges if the Department does not take the necessary action to meet their representations; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he will state whether he has received representations from the representatives of over 40 blacksmiths working in the North Riding of Tipperary regarding the difficulties they experience through lack of suitable fuel supplies, and the resulting hardships caused to farmers; and if he will state whether he proposes to make any arrangements to provide coal supplies for carrying out their work in the district.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 14 and 15 together.

Representations have been made to my Department by the Tipperary North Riding Blacksmiths' Association regarding their coal supplies. I have, on many occasions, explained in the Dáil that no supplies of special smith's coal can be obtained at present and blacksmiths must adapt themselves to the use of those types of coal that are now available.

Would the Minister consider that the supply of coal to blacksmiths is essential for carrying out farm work?

It is not a question of a supply of coal for blacksmiths. Blacksmiths will be given permits to purchase coal, but they cannot get the type of coal they require.

Let them purchase the coal. The good coal is there.

Will the Minister admit that the blacksmiths in shoeing horses and repairing cart wheels for farm work are taking part in the production of food which the Government seeks? What can they do if they cannot get the coal?
