Vol. 95 No. 8

Ceisteanna. — Questions. Oral Answers. - Compensation for Ship's Officer's Dependents.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that Mr. Kevin Furlong, who lost his life on the M.V. "Cymric" contributed to the rate of £4 per week to the maintenance of his parents who were largely dependent on his support for the maintenance of the family; if he will state if a claim for compensation has been rejected in this case, and, if so, for what reasons the claim has been rejected.

I am aware that Kevin Furlong, who was serving as second engineer on the missing M.V. "Cymric", made an allotment of £4 a week to his mother, Mrs. Mary Furlong. A claim for compensation was not received until Saturday last the 25th November. The circumstances of the case are at present being investigated.

Is the Minister aware that Kevin Furlong's father is now 70 years of age and will he take that into consideration when the case is being examined?

The claim was received last Saturday and a decision could not be made yet.

The only supporter of the family is a man over 70 years of age. That fact should be taken into consideration.
