Vol. 95 No. 8

Ceisteanna. — Questions. Oral Answers. - Remuneration of National Teachers.

asked the Minister for Education if he has received a communication from the Irish Bishops following their recent general meeting at Maynooth informing him that their Lordships had recommended the claim of the national teachers for increased remuneration to the sympathetic consideration of the Government, and, if so, what steps have been taken, or are proposed to be taken, to give effect to this recommendation.

The answer to the first part of the question is yes. With regard to the second part, I may say that their Lordships' recommendation is receiving the closest attention. An adjustment in the conditions relating to the emergency bonus payable to national teachers has been announced since their Lordships' letter was received. I regret I am not in a position to indicate what further steps, if any, it may be possible to take to give effect to their Lordships' recommendation.
