Vol. 95 No. 8

Ceisteanna. — Questions. Oral Answers. - Recognition of National Service.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware of the national services rendered by those who responded to the Government's call to join the Defence Forces and other emergency services; and, if so, if he will consider the matter of according official recognition to this personnel by presenting members with a medal or certificate on disbandment or otherwise.

The Government has already reached a decision on the matter to which the Deputy's question relates and has decided that two medals will be struck —one to be awarded to those who served during the emergency in the Defence Forces, Chaplaincy Service and Army Nursing Service and the other to those who served in the voluntary emergency services. The conditions which will govern the award in each case will be made known in due course.
