Vol. 95 No. 8

Ceisteanna. — Questions. Oral Answers. - Provision for Demobilised Soldiers.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware of the dissatisfaction which exists amongst members of the Defence Forces at the prospect of having to return to civilian life without any gratuity or other financial provision to tide them over the transition period from military to civilian occupations; and if he will state how soon he expects to be able to put his proposals on the matter before the Government.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to a similar question by Deputy O'Higgins on the 8th of this month. I am not yet in a position to indicate when my proposals in the matter will be decided on by the Government.

Is the Minister aware of the very widespread dissatisfaction which exists amongst members of the Defence Forces, many of whom have responsibilities to families and otherwise, who left, temporarily or permanently, civilian occupations in order to serve, and who are now sorely disappointed that there has been no statement from the Government on the matter?

I cannot say anything at the moment.

Can the Minister give any indication as to when he will be in a position to put proposals before the Dáil?

I could not say, because the matter has not reached the discussion stage yet with the Government.

Has the Department decided on any scheme?

We have proposals with the Government, as I said, but they have not reached the stage of discussion yet.
