Vol. 95 No. 8

Ceisteanna. — Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Fruit Prices.

Dr. Lynch

asked the Minister for Supplies if he is aware of the exorbitant prices charged by Dublin retailers for home-produced apples and pears; and, if so, whether, in view of their medicinal value, he will investigate the position with a view to fixing the maximum prices for these fruits.

I am aware that the prices being charged for home-produced apples and pears have been the subject of complaint. The practicability of controlling the prices of these fruits has been the subject of investigation. This investigation has shown, however, that owing to the absence of any general system of grading and marketing, and the diversified methods of transport and distribution at present operative, price control would not be practicable without considerable reorganisation in the trade. I am of opinion that such reorganisation would not be warranted solely for the purpose of price control.
