Vol. 96 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fuel Situation.

asked the Minister for Supplies if, in view of the fact that many firms and business houses which heretofore made arrangements for their own supplies of fuel are not now doing so in expectation of a more plentiful supply of coal for the coming season, he will consider the advisability of making a statement in the near future on the turf or coal situation for the 1945-46 period.

The turf requirements of the country for the year 1945-1946 and plans for production to meet these requirements have been under active consideration in my Department and announcements on the subject will be made from time to time as may appear desirable. In my considered opinion there are no grounds for anticipating more plentiful coal supplies. Firms or businesses which made arrangements to produce their own turf last year are being urged to make similar provision this year. The turf which will be produced for the national pool will be released for domestic use only, and firms which fail to make provision for their needs may find themselves without fuel supplies.
