Vol. 96 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Payment for Holiday Work.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that non-domestic workers who work on public holidays receive only one-fourth of a day's wages over and above that paid to similar employees who are off duty; whether this matter has been under consideration in his Department, and whether he will so amend the Act as to ensure that those working on public holidays will receive one and a quarter day's pay over and above the weekly wage they would have received if they had been off duty on a public holiday.

Under the Holidays (Employees) Act, 1939, a worker who works on a public holiday must receive a day off in lieu within one month or he must receive a day's pay increased by 25 per cent. Representations have been made to me in the matter and in the event of legislation being introduced to amend the Act, these representations will be borne in mind.
