Vol. 96 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition of Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state if it is the intention of the Land Commission to acquire Morgan's farm on the Maxwell Scott estate, at Gortmorris, Creggs, County Galway, for relief of congestion in that area.

The lands in question appear to comprise the tenanted holding of James Morgan and John J. Morgan in the townland of Gortmorris on the Maxwell Scott estate, Record No. S. 5039. No proceedings have been instituted by the Land Commission for the resumption of this holding and owing to emergency conditions the question of instituting such proceedings cannot be considered at present.

I would like to remind the Minister that this is a farm off which cattle were driven in 1920 and certain promises were made that it would be one of the first farms in that area to be acquired. I was informed as far back as 1934 that the resumption of this land was recommended. I would like to know what happened at that particular time and why the resumption was not carried out.

I do not know if that could be regarded as a supplementary question. The Deputy says there was a promise made in 1920. Many promises were made at that time.

Mr. Corish

You are telling us.

I shall have inquiries made into the matter.

Apart altogether from 1920, I was informed in 1934 that resumption was recommended in the case of this land. In view of the fact that the land is just growing rushes at the present time instead of being cultivated for the production of food, and that there is an enormous amount of congestion in that particular area, and, particularly, in view of the fact that one of these men is about to build a house on the land—I believe myself that if the house is built there is going to be wholesale trouble in that area-I would ask the Minister to take steps to see that something is done in this case immediately.

The Land Commission always have in mind the question of the relief of congestion. While the Land Commission is operating in its normal way in the future, I hope to deal with this matter.
