Vol. 96 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Monasterevan Cycle Tyre Licence.

asked the Minister for Supplies if, in view of the penalty inflicted on Mr. Kevin Cleary, Main Street, Monasterevan, by the revocation of his cycle tyre licence and the fact that it was the sole means of livelihood for himself and his family, he will now consider restoring his licence.

Mr. Cleary was convicted on nine separate charges of having sold bicycle tyres at prices grossly in excess of the controlled price, and he was also convicted on a number of charges of failure to record sales of tyres and of having made false entries in his records of tyre sales. I have already indicated in a statement to Dáil Éireann on the 9th July, 1943, that it is necessary for me to ensure that no section of the people will be left dependent for their supplies of essential goods on a trader who has shown himself to be incapable of being trusted to sell these goods at a fair price or to distribute them equitably. It is evident from the offences committed by Mr. Cleary that he is not a fit person to be entrusted with the distribution under emergency conditions of essential goods which are in short supply, and it is not, therefore, my intention to restore his cycle tyre retailer's licence.
