Vol. 96 No. 17

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Agricultural Workers in the Army.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware that the acute shortage of agricultural labour is partly due to the high proportion of the physically fit serving in the Defence Forces; and, if so, and in view of the fact that belligerent armies are actively engaged in agricultural production, if he will first demobilise the agricultural members in the Army to help in securing the country's food supply.

When demobilisation is undertaken, priority will be given to soldiers who have civilian employment awaiting them. In the meantime, the practice of granting agricultural leave to soldiers will be continued.
