Vol. 96 No. 20

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Emigration to Britain and Northern Ireland.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he will state the number of persons, distinguishing between men and women, who emigrated to (a) Britain, and (b) Northern Ireland for the purpose of taking up employment in each of the calendar years 1940-1941-1942-1943 and 1944, and for the months of January to March, 1945.

A return giving the figures will be circulated with the Official Report. As I explained before, the figures show the number of permits issued to persons travelling to take up employment, temporary or otherwise, and are, therefore, not a guide to the number of people emigrating in the ordinary sense.

Following is the return:—
