Vol. 97 No. 12

Minister for Supplies (Transfer of Functions) Bill, 1945—First Stage.

Leave granted to introduce a Bill entitled an Act to transfer the functions of the Minister for Supplies to the Minister for Industry and Commerce, to abolish the office of the Minister for Supplies, and to provide for certain other matters connected with the matters aforesaid.—(Minister for Industry and Commerce).
Second Stage ordered for Wednesday, 27th June.

Is the Government going to make any statement——

On this Bill? No.

——on the question raised by the invitations which have been issued instructing us to appear in ceremonial dress?

We have not finished the business.

I know what ceremonial dress is in London, Paris, New York and Tokyo, but I am blowed if I know what it is in this country.

It does not arise here.

I thought it might arise some time.

Not on an Agricultural Wages Bill.

Perhaps we are expected to turn up in bawneens. May I take it that the Government will make a statement on this?

On what is ceremonial dress in this country.

Cap and bells for the Deputy.

Whatever dress is worn on ceremonial occasions and so on.

If you have not got one, do not bother.

Well, I suppose a good many of us have not got one, but we would do our best on that occasion if we were told what it is. Is it a kilt? I draw the line at a kilt. Or is it tweeds, or is it a stockbroker's short black coat?

That notice was intended to indicate to members of public bodies and others who have ceremonial robes, and so on, that they should wear them.

But the rest of us can come as we like?

Not quite.

The Deputy may come bare-faced but not bare-legged.

Perhaps the Taoiseach would tell us how he is going to come, and then we will know.
