Vol. 97 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Revocation of Permit.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he will state upon what evidence or for what reason permit No. N.12795 has been revoked in respect of a small public service vehicle, Registration No. F.I. 2968, belonging to Mr. James Maher, Friar Street, Thurles; and if he will state whether the case will be reconsidered and the permit restored.

The permit for the small public service vehicle, Registration No. F.I. 2968, owned by Mr. James Maher, Friar Street, Thurles, was revoked because of its misuse on the 10th May, 1945, for the transport of the owner and five passengers who, after visiting Clonmel Mental Hospital, left accompained by a patient from the hospital, to attend horse races held at Clonmel on that date. I have reviewed the circumstances of this case but I am not prepared to restore the permit.

Will the Minister say if he has actual evidence that these persons attended horse races?

I have evidence that they stated that they were going to attend horse races.

My information is entirely to the contrary and I should like to ask the Minister if he would look into the matter again and consider these facts: (1) That the person whose licence has now been revoked had never any complaint or any suspicion against him during the whole emergency, and (2) whether it is not categorically denied that the persons who travelled to Clonmel attended horse racing?

The patient in the mental hospital received a pass to attend the races accompanied by the members of the party. They stated they were going to the races.

I throw up my hands if that is so. Can the Minister say if it was only the patient in the mental hospital who gave evidence in this case?
