Vol. 97 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Transport Facilities for Turf.

asked the Minister for Supplies if his attention has been drawn to the serious shortage of transport facilities for the removal of turf from bogs in Kerry, where the greater part of last year's turf is still on the bogs; if he is aware that both the Kerry County Council and private producers have tried in vain to get the necessary road and rail transport for removal of this fuel; and, if so, if he will encourage the people of Kerry to continue cutting turf this year by providing them with the means of disposing of what was saved in 1944.

I am fully aware of the transport difficulties in County Kerry, due to the limited capacity of the railway and the general shortage of transport equipment. It is not correct, however, that the greater part of last year's turf is still on the bogs. Arrangements are being made for the movement of the quantities still remaining as rapidly as possible, and, so far as is practicable, with a preference in favour of privately-produced turf.
