Vol. 97 No. 17

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Wool.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he is aware that grave dissatisfaction exists amongst wool producers regarding the prices paid by wool merchants for wool this season; and, if so, if he is prepared to fix a minimum price for all grades of wool purchased from the producers and to make such prices retrospective from the beginning of the 1945 season.

As I have already stated in reply to another question on the same subject, wool prices are a matter for arranging between buyer and seller, so long as the maximum prices set out in the 1944 Order are not exceeded. The maximum prices set out in that Order remain unchanged for the 1945 season. These prices are well above world prices for wool of like quality, and I understand that last year merchants found it difficult to dispose of certain kinds of wool purchased at maximum prices. I do not propose to fix minimum prices.
