Vol. 97 No. 23

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School of Art Scholarships.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state why scholarships in the School of Art were withheld during the past five years; if the withholding of these scholarships was with his knowledge and consent; if he is aware that the withholding of scholarships in these years has had an adverse effect on the students, who thereby have no incentive to study; and, if so, if he will indicate when the scholarships will be reintroduced.

Three scholarships tenable at the National College of Art are awarded biennially by my Department on the result of a public competitive examination open to candidates throughout the country. The last three were awarded in 1943 and an examination for the award of a further three, tenable in the ordinary course as from the commencement of the session 1945/46, was held at the College from the 10th to the 13th instant. None of these scholarships has been withheld in the past five years.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state who selects the adjudicators in matters concerning the awarding of scholarships and prizes to the students of the School of Art; and if sufficient attention is given in the selection of these names to the advancement of works of Irish historical value.

There are no scholarships specially reserved by my Department for students of the College of Art. The adjudication for the award of prizes to students of the college is conducted by the director of the college.
