Vol. 98 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Coal Cargoes to Wexford Harbours.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will consider having the necessary arrangements made whereby vessels carrying coal can be discharged in Wexford Harbour, or Rosslare Harbour, as this would be more economical to the traders in provincial towns.

It is no longer necessary to exercise official control over ships engaged in the coal trade. When in May, 1944, British colliers were temporarily withdrawn, the Irish tonnage available for coal was inadequate and a measure of control had to be introduced to ensure that the best possible use would be made of this shipping: with the return of British colliers in June, 1945, official control was terminated. It is now a matter for importers to negotiate with shipowners in regard to the port of discharge desired for each cargo.
